Tomorrow afternoon, a lawsuit is being filed in State Circuit Court with regard to the robo-calls being made against various political candidates.
My name is State Senator Dan Lederman, and my organization, Rushmore PAC is the plaintiff in the case. We are bringing this lawsuit because we think that the South Dakota public deserves better than mudslinging from anonymous people involved in the election process purposely cloaking themselves from public view.
South Dakotans deserve a robust election year, with plenty of debate and discussion on the issues facing our state and community. We deserve clean and fair elections. If we’re going to have that, then that means all of the players have to play by the campaign finance and election laws.
Regardless of your position on the issues we can all agree that everyone must follow the law. Unfortunately we have people and groups refusing to file campaign finance statements and make the required disclosures that South Dakota law requires.
We don’t care who is doing this. We just want them and everybody else to follow the law
At the very best this group of people are naive and don’t understand election law. They are in over their heads and have run afoul of the law. Or the worst case scenario is that they completely understand what they are doing and are purposefully violating the law and treating fellow citizens as ignorant know-nothing’s.
Our State’s citizens are smart, and can decide for themselves when they have all the facts. And it’s our goal to ensure that they have them before the next election.
